Beautiful People || May || Bethany's Character

Now it's my turn to introduce another character from my WIP "Mithras & Myrrh".  For this round of questions, it took me a bit to decide who to use them on. I could have given either Porcia or Quintus another chance, but I ended up with a side character, Linus, the physician Milo is apprenticing under.

He's become a favorite of mine, with his quirky personality and atypical mentor relationship with Milo, so it will be fun to explore his character more with this month's questions!

How often do they smile? Would they smile at a stranger?

Linus is quick to smile, and would smile at anyone. He enjoys observing people and their idiosyncrasies. If he wasn't lost in his own thoughts, he'd probably smile at something he noticed someone doing, and then they'd get creeped out to see someone randomly smiling at them.

What is the cruelest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?
Doctors in ancient Rome were an interesting group. Many were just in it for the money, dishing out so called remedies and charms and promising to cure people. Linus genuinely wants to help others, but with having to fight through the tarnished reputation, he hears a lot of cruel comments and accusations from people. Outwardly, he brushes them off, but they make him try all the harder to do things the right way, and hurt all the deeper when he fails.

What is the kindest thing they’ve ever been told? And what was their reaction?

Does, "Papa, you are the best doctor in the world" count? Linus laughed, picked up his little boy and rumpled his hair.

What is one strong memory that has stuck with your character from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?

When Linus was a boy, he found a falcon with a broken wing. He wrapped it up and fed it until it could fly again, and even after it was better, it would follow him around and bring him rodents. It was when he discovered he wanted to be doctor, and he often fondly remembers that falcon and wishes people would be as appreciative of his help.  Not that he wants them to bring him rodents, but a thank you every once in a while would be nice.

What book (a real actual published book!) do you think your character would benefit from reading?

Not to steal an answer from Becca, but the Bible would be my first choice too. Milo is working on it. After that, maybe some textbooks on modern medicine and surgery.  Although, the technology involved would be a little bewildering for him...

Have they ever been seriously injured? How severely? How did they react?
Well, he's definitely seen some serious injuries, but I don't think he's experienced anything very bad himself.  He has a pretty high pain tolerance, but he'd like to get sympathy, so he might make a bigger deal of it then it actually is.

Do they like and get along with their neighbours?

He has no problems with his neighbors, but they don't always appreciate his five noisy children, or the unnerving moans and hollers they hear coming from his storefront.

On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being easy and 10 being difficult) how easy are they to get along with?

Generally he's fairly easy to get along with, but he also loves to argue and tease, so I'd say around a six or seven.

If they could travel anywhere in the world, where would they go?
I think he's pretty content to stay where he is. The city of Salonae, located in modern day Croatia, is a very beautiful area.

Who was the last person they held hands with?

Either his wife Chloe, or one of his children. He doesn't have much time to give them, but he loves being with them so much.

  1. Oh, Linus sounds wonderful! I love him already. (And it's so cool that he's a Roman doctor! Because Romans in general are intensely interesting, first of all, and also because I happen to be reading a book where the main character is a Roman surgeon.) :)

    1. Thanks! Yes, Romans are quite interesting, and I've been having fun digging into their world. What book is that? Sounds like it would be good for research. :)

    1. Well, some of those answers were thought up just for the questions, but thanks! It has been fun to do research for Linus's character.
