Hello there!
I'm tagging along with Beth this month and doing the Beautiful People link-up.
The last time I did this was..... wow! Over a year ago, before we went to bible school.
I haven't been nearly as dedicated to writing as my sister has, but I still have a story and charaters that have been simmering :) Today may be the day to introduce one of them.
But first, I should share a bit about the story this character comes from.
The story is called "In the Present Age." It's honestly a bit hard to describe...
It's set in a slightly futuristic world, but not too different from ours.
The Cities have grown, nearly all the population have been absorbed into their nearest Metropolis. In the digital age the term "privacy" has become a myth, but in return the Cities provide any material thing you could ever want. A job, a nice apartment, plenty options for shopping and entertainment, and more people than you would ever want to meet. It's the American dream on steroids, and everyone is happy. At least everyone who matters. Just sit back, relax, and don't ask any questions if you value your life.
With that said, meet Aurora ( Rory ) Sonders.
Rory first came about as a main character for my short story Unwanted. At the time she simply came along with the whole scene, I hadn't really planned her specifically; she just seemed to step into the story. Since then I've gotten to know her better, and she's made some big changes since her first appearance.
I hadn't really based her off of anyone in particular, but she is in some ways similar to me. We have a similar personality, but I've tried to keep her differences and understand how she works.
I did find a picture on Pinterest for inspiration.
2. Describe their daily routine.
She wakes up :) Eats breakfast with Grams and has a cup of coffee. She works with Grams as a cleaning lady for the apartment building they live in. Grams isn't as spry as she once was and needs the help. So most of the day is spent with a vacuum or mop in hand and earbuds blasting her favorite music. She'll make dinner for the two of them, and the evening is spent with an old movie and some crocheting. If it's a Friday night, she'll wait till Grams is asleep and then sneak out with her friends.
3. If they joined your local high school, what clique would they fit into?
She wished she could be one of the cool kids, a girl can dream right? :)
Most likely she'd find her way into the fringe of a popular group, she's a sweet girl and would do anything to be noticed and liked.
4. Write a list of things they merely tolerate. Ex: certain people, foods, circumstances in their lives…
Loneliness. Being invisible. The guy next door, he bangs on the wall when she plays her records. Living in the city, it's so big and loud and cruel.
5. How do they react in awkward silences?
Assume it's her fault, try and fail to make it less awkward and later replay that conversation in her mind, thinking of what she could've said.
6. Can they swim? If so, how did they learn?
Maybe. It hasn't come up yet. I bet there's a YMCA nearby where she could've had swimming lessons.
7. What is one major event that helped shape who they are?
Rory lost her parents when she was young. Her parents already lived a precarious life, living on the street or wherever they could stay. They were traveling musicians, or drug dealers, it depends what they let people see.
If Grams hadn't found Rory when she did, Rory would have been sucked into the dangerous life her parents chose, or worse.
8. What things do they value most in life?
Grams mostly, Grams is all she has.
Rory values life. She's seen people just thrown away like trash, and that's not right.
9. Do they believe in giving other people second chances? Do they have any trust issues?
Yes, Rory believes in second chances, but I doubt that's really been put to the test... yet.
She doesn't have trust issues necessarily, but she's guarded at first.
When she trusts someone, that trust is only broken in extreme circumstances.
10. Your character is having a rough day…what things do they do to make them happy again? Is there anyone they talk/interact with to get in a better mood?
Talking with Grams always helps. Music, a cozy sweater, and fresh air. It might not make her happy but it eases the pain. And then of course a hug never hurt :)
Aw! She sounds cute. ^ ^ The worldbuilding for your story sounds really cool. I wish you the best writing this character!
