Janeite Tag

Many thanks to Paige for passing along this lovely tag!
Paige blogs at Sunday Best and All the Rest, and if you've never been there before, go say hello!  Her posts are always so fun and encouraging.

The Rules:
~Thank and link back to the person who tagged you.
~Tell how you were introduced to Jane Austen and share one fun fact about your Janeite life (this fun fact can be anywhere from "I stayed up all night reading Emma," to "I visited Chawton and met Anna Chancellor.").

~Answer the tagger's questions.
~Write seven questions of your own.
~Tag as few as one or as many as seven other Janeites and let them know you've tagged them

Reading how Paige was introduced through the TV show "Wishbone" reminded us that we had seen that episode too, once upon a time, and had completely forgotten about it (until her post, and a quick trip to YouTube helped jog our memory).  But besides that, a little bit later, I think we watched the 1983 adaptation of Mansfield Park, and then read Pride and Prejudice for school.

All right, now for some fun facts about our Janeite lives.

Bethany: "I can't think of a fun fact about me, but here's a fun fact about Jane Austen!  Northanger Abbey was actually the first book she wrote, but it wasn't published until after her death."

Becca: "I took the "Which Jane Austen Character would be your ideal husband quiz"
And my result was Willoughby!
AARRRGHHH!
I have no idea how I got that result, really I don't.
I tried retaking it, but it wouldn't let me." :(

Bethany: "My result was Henry Tilney!" :D

Becca: "Double AARRRGHH!"

1) What is your favorite Austen book?
I think we can both say Northanger Abbey is our favorite.  Only Bethany has actually read it from cover to cover, but she kept reading parts aloud to Becca.  (Especially the parts with Henry Tilney)

2) What is your favorite movie adaptation of an Austen book?
We really enjoyed the 1996 version of Emma. We haven't read the book yet, so we can't attest to how close it stays to the original story.

We also liked most of the 2007 version of Northanger Abbey, except for how the writers ellaborated/ exaggerated certain scenes that needed to be fast-forwarded
(Isabella Thorpe has some inappropriate necklines too.)

3) What is your *least* favorite movie adaptation?
The 1980 Pride and Prejudice scarred us so badly we've been afraid to try another version. :) I'm sure anything would be better than that one.  It was soooooo sloooooow.  They were still sitting in their dimly lit parlor when we gave up because we were almost asleep.

4) Which character in any of the novels do you relate to most?

Yep, that's us. :)
Bethany = Eleanor and Becca = Marianne
I don't know if we would ever get in a situation like they did, but personality wise, we relate to these sisters pretty well.

5) If you could choose a Jane Austen home to live in, where would you live?
Hmmm... Northanger Abbey would be pretty cool; creepy, but cool.

6) Who is your favorite Austen hero?
Bethany and Becca in unison: "Henry Tilney!!"

7) If you were to write a sequel to any of Jane's novels, what would it be about?
Henry and Catherine get married, live in their darling little house and have lots of children.  One in particular, a young girl, is sent to live with her uncle to be a companion for his only child.  Together the two of them discover a mystery within Northhanger Abbey that even Catherine Morland couldn't dream up.

Here's our questions!

1)  If you were to name a child after an Austen character,
 which name would you choose?
2)  Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters are all coming to your house for tea; what do you serve them, and  what would you talk about?
3) If you were running down a hill in the rain, fell and broke your ankle, and a handsome young man jumped down off his horse to rescue you, would it be love at first sight?
4) Which Austen heroine would make the best companion for the Doctor?
5) Which Austen character most deserves a slap in the face?
6) If all the main characters from Jane Austen's books were attending a ball, who do you suppose would strike up the most engaging conversation?
7) If you and your favorite Austen heroine unexpectantly switched places for the day, what havoc would be wrought in both the literary world, and the real one?

Becca: "Lovely. Aren't those such clever questions?"
Bethany: "I can't wait to see people's answers!"

Instead of tagging people, we welcome any Jane Austen fans to answer our questions! If you write a post, please be sure to let us know. Otherwise, answer in the comments!

  1. Lovely! :-)
I think I will answer your questions as they are so delightful!

    1) If you were to name a child after an Austen character,
    which name would you choose?

    Female: first and second name
Elizabeth Jane (Lizzy and Jane Bennet)
    Male: first and second name
    Christopher Matthew (Colonel Brandon)

    2) Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters are all coming to your house for tea; what do you serve them, and what would you talk about?

The Bennets are coming for tea oh how simply delightful! I think I would serve them scones and tea and we would all talk of how wonderful life is, although Kitty and Lydia would be bored stiff and talk of nothing but officers. Leaving Jane, Lizzy and I to talk about literature..

    3) If you were running down a hill in the rain, fell and broke your ankle, and a handsome young man jumped down off his horse to rescue you, would it be love at first sight?

Umm I don't think so, I would probably get to know him first and see what his characteristics are like then make my judgement.

    4) Which Austen heroine would make the best companion for the Doctor?

You are Doctor Who fans too!? XD umm I would like to say Lizzy because she would be a little like clara I think :D

    5) Which Austen character most deserves a slap in the face?

    Coughmrsbennetwilloubhgyandwickhamcoughcough

    6) If all the main characters from Jane Austen's books were attending a ball, who do you suppose would strike up the most engaging conversation?

With me? The colonel, we share a love for music and reading, but I think Bingley would get the attention of everyone :)

    7) If you and your favorite Austen heroine unexpectantly switched places for the day, what havoc would be wrought in both the literary world, and the real one?

Myself and Marianne, I don't actually know, I would get to live with sisters which would be nice but I think Marianne would be a little silly and feel a little out of place in 2014 Australia.

    Wonderful Questions! :D

  2. Yay! Thanks for doing this! :D I really liked reading Northanger Abbey, especially since Mr. Tilney was such a funny yet kind hero. Your sequel sounds like a great read...you should do it. ;) Now to answer your Q's!
    1) If you were to name a child after an Austen character,
    which name would you choose?
Yikes, good question! Elinor would be a good name. :)
    2) Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters are all coming to your house for tea; what do you serve them, and what would you talk about?
I would serve them my Mom's famous scones, and we would discuss literature, and the affects of walking upon one's health.
    3) If you were running down a hill in the rain, fell and broke your ankle, and a handsome young man jumped down off his horse to rescue you, would it be love at first sight?
Probably not, I like to get to know people better. I must admit that it would immediately get me thinking of him favorably though. ;)
    4) Which Austen heroine would make the best companion for the Doctor?
Not being a Whovian, I really have no idea...O.o
    5) Which Austen character most deserves a slap in the face?
    Willoughby.
    6) If all the main characters from Jane Austen's books were attending a ball, who do you suppose would strike up the most engaging conversation?
I think that Mrs. Bennet and Mary Musgrove would have a great time exchanging illness stories. Mr. Knightly and Mr. Tilney would have an exciting time lovingly teasing their wives.
    7) If you and your favorite Austen heroine unexpectantly switched places for the day, what havoc would be wrought in both the literary world, and the real one?
Let's say Elinor Dashwood and I switched. We're both fairly reserved, so nothing too crazy would happen. I would probably trip over my long skirt and break some fine china, spill some tea and run off Marianne's suitors with my clumsiness. She wouldn't wreak too much havoc, but would probably have my dog far better trained than I do.

    1. Ooo, I really like the name Elinor too...in fact, so does Becca, so we kind of argue about who will get to use it. :) It was fun to read your answers!

  5. What a fun tag! I enjoyed reading your answers. Haha, the 80's version of P&P is dull! My mom watched it and the moments I caught did not make me want to watch any more. The 1995 version is much better (even if it is 6 hours long). =)
I think I will accept the tag and make a post out of it! Thanks.

  6. Hi! My sister reads your blog and was reading this post to me. I like Jane Austen so thought it would be fun to comment and answer your questions.

    1) If you were to name a child after an Austen character,
    which name would you choose?
I like the name Fitzwilliam for a boy. And for a Girl I think I would pick Emma.

2)Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters are all coming to your house for tea; what do you serve them, and what would you talk about?

I would serve cinnamon rolls and tea with cream and sugar.

3)If you were running down a hill in the rain, fell and broke your ankle, and a handsome young man jumped down off his horse to rescue you, would it be love at first sight?

NO NOT AT ALL!!!!!! I would think about him a lot probably but not fall in love. It would take me a lot to fall for a man just because he rescued me.

4)Which Austen heroine would make the best companion for the Doctor?

IDK? I don't do Doctor who AT ALL!

5)Which Austen character most deserves a slap in the face?

I say Frank Churchill. The others such as Willoughby and Wickham need something worse. =)

6)If all the main characters from Jane Austen's books were attending a ball, who do you suppose would strike up the most engaging conversation?

    Henry Tilney by far!

7)If you and your favorite Austen heroine unexpectantly switched places for the day, what havoc would be wrought in both the literary world, and the real one?

Hummm I think Emma is my favorite but I think we would not get into too much trouble. I am Maryann according to the quiz which is true I am most like her so if we switched I think we would have no problem.
